Woodward played for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur and took part in over 60 international game for England. He was famously credited with scoring a total of eight goals against France in a 15-0 trouncing.

He led England to victory in both the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games and continued playing professionally until 1920, ending his glittering career for Clacton Town F.C. Woodward died in 1954, aged 74.
